We are making progress on the Spirit of Tasmania Terminal Upgrade at Devonport Wharf, a key infrastructure project designed to support two new Spirit of Tasmania vessels. This upgrade will enhance operational efficiency, reduce turnaround times, and improve the overall passenger experience.
As part of this upgrade, piling works will commence from the second week of April and continue until December 2025. Contractors will install large steel piles into the Mersey riverbed to support the new ship berth. This work will involve specialised drilling equipment and will take place:
- 24 hours a day, Monday to Friday
- Until 6pm on Saturdays
While no piling is scheduled for Sundays or public holidays, some work outside these hours may be required due to weather, soil conditions, or other unforeseen circumstances.
We acknowledge that construction noise can be disruptive, and we are committed to minimising impacts through:
- Using quieter equipment where possible
- Installing noise barriers, including shipping containers
- Continuous monitoring of sound levels, including through permanent noise monitoring devices
Keeping the Community Informed
To ensure timely and transparent communication, we are implementing a staged communication approach using multiple channels:
- 18–19 March: Initial consultation and direct letters to properties identified in our Noise Management Plan
- Early April: A letter drop to approximately 8,000 properties in Devonport and East Devonport
- Local media: An advertisement will be placed in the Advocate newspaper
- Project website updates: The Spirit Quay website will provide regular updates, including:
- Marine piling FAQs
- Media releases
- Project newsletters and progress updates
We encourage you to share this information with your networks to help keep key stakeholders informed.
Thank you for your ongoing patience and support as we deliver this critical upgrade, ensuring a smoother and more efficient journey for passengers travelling between Tasmania and the mainland.
